Start on the Shore. Master Fuel, Circadian, and Strength. Add extra fins only when the board is solid. Then learn to read the ride — wipeouts and good ones — with the Surf Judge.

The Shore — Spiritual Health & Living Water

I write from my Christian faith; readers of any faith or none are welcome to use the practical parts.

Life is surfing one ocean. You are not the water and you are not a sealed bottle on the beach. You are a ride: a view the ocean takes for a while. That ocean is spiritual before it is mechanical. To know God is not to stand on the sand and study the map. It is to feel that you are already in the water — and to stay in relationship with the life that holds every wave.

Skill is real. Strength is real. A fine board helps. But if there is no foundation — no knowing of the ocean, no love for the other riders in the lineup — the most excellent board still is not a great ride. You can have every protocol and miss the water.

  • Know the ocean.
  • Honor the other riders.
  • Care for the board so the view can stay kind long enough to love.
  • Fuel, clock, and the mitochondrial engines serve the ride. They are not the ocean.

Living Water

Under Fuel.

Foremost is spiritual hunger. Our primary drive seeks spiritual fulfillment. When unmet, it pushes us to seek worldly substitutes.

As Jesus declared in John 6:35, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty."

Practice: Letting go of worldly distractions (see Frugal Shore Practices).

First Light

Under Circadian.

"Let there be light." Light is the first contrast that makes any later perspective possible.

"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."

Practice: Intuitive prayer and Simply being in His presence (see Frugal Shore Practices).

Agape

Under Strength.

The other people in the water are not obstacles to your wave. They are other views of the same ocean. You give way, you call a set, you do not treat a neighbor as a tool for your score. Love is association across the line that still distinguishes you from them.

When Jesus touches the leper, He refuses the sacrificial logic that says "touching the unclean makes one unclean." Agape is the association that does not require the expulsion of the other in order to remain itself.

Read more: Jesus and the leper (Sage).

Practice: Orientation towards God's agape (see Frugal Shore Practices).

The Strong Foundation

Jesus taught this in Luke 6:47–49:

"Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built." (Luke 6:47–49)

Read more: Living Water (Sage).

Frugal Shore Practices

The shore practices are frugal — cheap, repeatable, and upstream of gadgets:

Living Water

  • Letting go of worldly distractions and self-obsessions: Releasing the noise that pulls attention away from His presence — including health-anxiety theater that never rests.

First Light

  • Intuitive prayer: A natural, ongoing communion with God rather than rigid religious performance.
  • Simply being in His presence, experiencing the peace of God: Resting in communion rather than perpetual problem-solving.

Agape

  • Orientation towards God's agape toward Him and others: Shifting focus from self to His love and the love of others.

When Shore is thin, people often stack Extra fins to fill a hole that is not metabolic. Return here before buying another tool.

The Shore

The Three Pillars — Fuel

This pillar sits on the Shore: Living Water.

Two partners. Wrong fuel stings both.

Four Fuel fins: animal fats (energy), animal proteins (substrates/signals), MAC/biota fuel, toxins/jellyfish (simple carbs · seed oils · alcohol). Eat in daylight — in this hypothesis, meals finish ~4 hours before sleep. Board solid first; creatine, ketones, caffeine are fins.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage

You have two nested partners: mitochondria inside cells, and the gut community. Feed each what it was built to use. Time the meals so both can rest at night. Get the board solid first; extra fins come after.

Animal fats & proteins

Fats · Proteins (legacy anchor keeps this heading)

Animal fats (energy)

  • Animal fats are the main energy fuel for the inner partner (mitochondria): orderly fat-burning and ketone tone when carbs are low.
  • Ruminant fat, egg yolk, and similar animal-pattern lipids match the membrane story better than a fryer-oil default.
  • This is a hierarchy, not a ban on plants. Industrial seed oils belong under toxins, not as the default pan fat.
  • Composition fin — what. When you eat still lives under Circadian Fuel timing.

Coach — Animal fats · Sage — Animal fats · Fuel hub

Related: HydroEye on Surf Shop (sold through MDVite, EnSurf LLC’s store; not manufactured by EnSurf). More on HydroEye: Surfer · Coach · Sage.

Animal proteins (building)

  • Animal proteins supply amino acids and building pieces (creatine, carnitine, and related) for muscle, enzymes, and repair.
  • Strength training uses those signals — this lesson covers the food substrate, not the workout program.
  • Prefer whole-food animal protein before inventing powder stacks.
  • Pair with fats and MAC; subtract jellyfish toxins so the building material is not drowned in sugar and seed oil.

Coach — Animal proteins · Sage — Animal proteins · Fuel hub

Fermented MACs and mushrooms

MAC / biota fin

MAC fuel (biota)

  • Fermented foods and microbiota-accessible carbohydrates feed the outer partner (gut biota) that helps make short-chain helpers like butyrate.
  • Fermentation eats fast sugars first — a practical twin to the simple-carb toxin sting.
  • Mushrooms and traditional ferments sit here as frugal biota fuel — not a probiotic shopping list.
  • Keep overnight recovery in mind: Fuel timing still matters.

Coach — MAC / biota · Sage — MAC / biota · Fuel hub

Toxins (the jellyfish)

  • Sugars, seed oils, alcohol, continuous THC, mistimed caffeine, and dirty-environment load can sting the engine.
  • Subtraction often beats a new supplement. Stop the jellyfish before adding more gear.
  • Six named stings below — same instinct, different chemistry.
  • Positive fins (fats, proteins, MAC) rebuild the plate after you stop the sting.

Sugars (simple carbs)

Glucose can be fast fuel under real demand. An all-day refined stream is a sting — extra ROS and insulin weather when the motor is already busy. No carb-gram religion; prefer subtraction and MAC displacement.

Seed oils (+ processed foods)

Industrial seed oils at modern volumes are a novel lipid load — they slip into membranes and peroxidize. Packages often carry oils + sugars + emulsifiers together. Prefer subtraction, then animal-pattern fats on the fats fin.

Alcohol

Alcohol is metabolic vandalism of redox and restore — NADH surge and acetaldehyde load mitochondria must clear. Not a nutrient. Not a drinking protocol. Addiction care is clinician terrain.

THC

THC turns up a conservation / recovery signal (including a mitochondrial throttle). A rare pulse after real load is not the same as all-day occupancy that dulls sleep and appetite control.

Caffeine

Caffeine lifts the adenosine brake — it does not create energy. Morning can help when Fuel and sleep are honest; late can sting repair. Context decides hormesis vs toxin. See also Extra fin Caffeine and Hormesis timing.

Environmental toxins

Pesticides, dirty air, plasticizers, microplastics — reduce what you can without detox theater.

Coach — Toxins · Sage — Toxins · Fuel hub

When you eat

  • Eat in the daylight. In this hypothesis, meals finish at least four hours before sleep so overnight repair can run.
  • Late food keeps insulin and digestion going when the body wanted a fast.

Extra fins (after Fuel is solid)

These tools amplify Fuel once the basics are consistent. They are not substitutes.

Creatine

Creatine buffers ATP and supports phosphocreatine stores. It is well studied for high-intensity performance; support for cognitive resilience under load is a hypothesis here. It is low-cost, and a fin, not the board.

Ketones

Whether produced endogenously via fasting/low-carb states or supplied exogenously, ketones provide an alternative, efficient fuel for brain and muscle and can reduce the need for constant glucose availability.

Caffeine

Used strategically, caffeine temporarily lifts the adenosine energy-stress brake and can increase alertness and performance when Fuel / Circadian / Strength can answer. Timing matters; late use disrupts the circadian pillar and recovery. Deeper map: Signals (adenosine / caffeine nest). Not a Surfer milligram protocol.

HydroEye (membrane fork)

When wild-caught fish is thin, an oral GLA + EPA/DHA softgel is a Fuel membrane tool in this model — it edits acyl identity and steers an eicosanoid fork so less ATP is wasted on inflammatory leak. It does not grow cristae or raise mitochondrial voltage. No dry-eye disease marketing. Combining HydroEye with prescription dry-eye drops is a question for your own physician. HydroEye® is a ScienceBased Health product; EnSurf does not manufacture it.

The Three Pillars — Circadian

This pillar sits on the Shore: First Light.

Biology is timed. Four Circadian timing fins: Light · Temperature · Hormesis timing · Fuel timing. Sleep, “food timing,” and “movement timing” below are results of these fins — not separate fins. Misalignment is expensive. Daily rhythm first; extra light tools after.

Related on Surf Wax: LMNT electrolytes.

Light

  • Light is a Circadian timing fin — not a separate pillar. Day wants outdoor-bright eyes and sky; night wants real dark.
  • Contrast matters as much as any gadget. Morning outdoor light helps set the day’s clock; late bright screens argue that night is day.
  • Vitamin D is not the whole light story. Melatonin and cortisol weather ride the same day/night contrast.
  • Extra fins (bright boxes, red/NIR) come after the daily rhythm is solid.

Coach — Circadian Light · Sage — Circadian Light · Sage Circadian

Temperature

  • Temperature is a Circadian timing fin: cool nights and honest seasonal cues help the restore window; constant indoor heat flattens the signal.
  • Thyroid and metabolic rate talk to temperature — labs are dashboards, not the whole weather.
  • Cold/heat as hormetic tools are neighbors of Hormesis timing — this lesson covers thermal timing context, not a plunge protocol table.
  • Frugal first: cooler sleep space and daylight movement before buying gadgets.

Coach — Temperature · Sage — Temperature · Coach Thyroid

Hormesis timing

  • Hormesis timing is when capacity stress lands — hard work inside the spend window Light opened, then a night allowed to restore.
  • Midnight hero workouts under arena LEDs are often mismatched training, not virtue.
  • Strength owns the program (sets, volume, ETC fins). This lesson covers the clock for load.

Related notes

These are outcomes or neighbors of the four timing fins.

Related on Surf Wax: 10K Happy Light.

Related on Surf Wax: Red / near-IR light.

Sleep (legacy label)

Sleep is when mitophagy, memory consolidation, and hormonal reset get a real chance — a result of Light + Temperature + Hormesis timing + Fuel timing done well, not a fifth Circadian fin. Sleep debt is metabolic debt. Fix the four fins before buying a sleep gadget stack.

Related on Surf Wax: Oura Ring.

Food timing & fasting (legacy label)

See the Circadian fin Fuel timing. Composition (what you eat) stays under Fuel’s four fins.

Movement timing (legacy label)

See Hormesis timing for when load lands, and Strength fins for what capacity work. Late-night intense training under bright light is often a mismatch — not a moral failure.

Extra fins (after Circadian is solid)

Amplifiers once morning light and sleep already hold. Not a replacement for outdoor day and dark night.

10k lux light

Bright light therapy (about 10,000 lux at the eye, typically about 30 minutes in the morning at the distance the maker specifies) is a potent circadian entrainer, especially useful in northern latitudes or for people with limited outdoor time. Use a UV-filtered box, don’t stare into the light, and check with your physician first if you have bipolar disorder, a retinal or other eye disease, or take light-sensitizing medication.

Red / NIR LED light

Red and near-infrared wavelengths penetrate tissue and are studied for effects on cytochrome c oxidase, local circulation, and recovery. Used as a targeted adjunct, not a replacement for sunlight.

The Three Pillars — Strength

This pillar sits on the Shore: Agape.

Strength here is mitochondrial. The four levers are density, quality (age), efficiency of the electron transport chain, and total volume (hypertrophy of the mitochondrial network). Train and recover on solid ground first. Gear and stacks are fins, not the board.

Biogenesis — mitochondrial density

  • New mitochondria are built when demand and signals (PGC-1α axis) say “we need more power plants.”
  • Consistent mechanical and metabolic stress that is recovered from raises density — stress without recover is cascade weather.
  • Hormesis timing decides when the load lands; this lesson covers the capacity lever of building more mito.
  • Extra fins (NR, PQQ, etc.) wait until training and Fuel are honest.

Coach — Biogenesis · Sage — Biogenesis · Strength hub · Hormesis timing

Mitophagy — mitochondrial quality

  • Old or damaged mitochondria must be cleared so the fleet stays honest — quality, not just count.
  • Night restore, fasting windows, and training recovery are when cleanup gets a chance.
  • Biogenesis without mitophagy is a crowded junkyard; mitophagy without biogenesis is an empty lot.
  • Extra mitophagy fins stay optional.

Coach — Mitophagy · Sage — Mitophagy · Strength hub

ETC function — the motor

  • The electron-transport chain turns food electrons into a proton gradient and ATP — the motor diagram behind “energy.”
  • Membrane quality (Fuel fats vs seed-oil sting), oxygen, and ADP demand decide whether the motor purrs or leaks ROS.
  • Methylene blue is an optional ETC+ pointer — see Coach/Sage MB.
  • Read Coach or Sage ETC for the full systems map.

Coach — ETC · Sage — ETC · Methylene Blue · Fuel toxins

Strength-volume / hypertrophy

  • Progressive tension and enough weekly volume grow force capacity — the structural fin of Strength.
  • Protein (Fuel) supplies building pieces; this lesson covers the training stimulus, not the grocery list.
  • Recover between hard days so energy charge and sleep can rewrite the tissue — Hormesis timing still applies.
  • Extra fins wait for a solid board.

Coach — Strength-volume · Sage — Strength-volume · Coach Strength

Extra fins (after Strength is solid)

Equipment and optional stacks once training and recovery are consistent. Not substitutes for the four levers above.

ARXFit

Adaptive resistance equipment that matches force output in real time. High mechanical tension with controlled fatigue can efficiently stimulate the strength signals that drive mitochondrial biogenesis and hypertrophy.

Concept2 Erg

Rowing provides a full-body metabolic and mechanical stimulus with measurable power output. Useful for building both aerobic capacity and the strength adaptations that support mitochondrial volume.

Related on Surf Wax: Concept2 rowing erg.

Biogenesis+ — NR & PQQ

Nicotinamide riboside (NR) supports NAD+ pools relevant to sirtuin and PARP activity. PQQ is studied for its potential role in mitochondrial biogenesis signaling. Both are optional amplifiers once training and recovery are solid.

PQQ depth (The Kit): Surfer · Coach · Sage

Mitophagy+ — Urolithin A

Urolithin A is a gut-derived metabolite that has been shown to induce mitophagy in certain models. It represents a targeted approach to improving mitochondrial quality.

ETC+ — Astaxanthin, CoQ10 & Methylene Blue

Astaxanthin is a potent carotenoid antioxidant that can protect membranes. Coenzyme Q10 is an integral electron carrier in the ETC; levels can decline with age or statin use. Both support efficient electron flow under stress.

Old blue dye. Electron ferry. Fin — not board.

In this model, methylene blue can shuttle electrons when mitochondrial Complexes I/III jam. It is an advanced tool, only after Fuel, light, sleep, and training are honest. USP grade only. Hard stops: G6PD; many serotonergic meds. Clinician required. Low chronic window — not a daily mg/kg flex.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage · Surf Shop

Methylene blue, in this system, sits in Strength: a catalytic redox shuttle that can keep electrons moving when Complexes I/III are congested. It is not a first-line fuel. Read Coach/Sage before the Store card.

GLP-1s / Statins (Kit)

Coach · Sage · The Kit

The Kit — Alpha-lipoic acid (carbon gate)

Open the carbon gate. Re-poise the couple. Not a theory of everything.

Alpha-lipoic acid is the lipoyl arm of the enzymes that let food carbon enter the citric acid cycle — and, in a capsule, a short-lived redox buffer. Board first — Fuel, Circadian, Strength — then talk with your clinician. Pairing with methylene blue is mechanistic adjacency (carbon in / electrons out), not a page-prescribed stack.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage

Hypothesis (plain): when the gate into the cycle is under-lipoylated, redox-clogged, or kinase-inhibited, the cell ferments with oxygen present. Exogenous lipoic acid is a hypothesis about reopening that gate and re-poising thiol couples — not a vitamin repletion story and not a lifespan claim.

  • Cofactor vs capsule: bound lipoamide is the swinging arm; free ALA is a redox couple and weak AMPK/Nrf2 nudge.
  • Clinical signal (trials cited on Sage): neuropathy symptoms in short trials — not nerve-conduction rescue, not anti-aging.
  • Escalate: glucose-lowering on insulin/sulfonylureas, thyroid timing, metal redistribution, GI intolerance — Do not invent milligrams from this page; Do not invent MB doses.

Not a self-treatment guide. Education and metabolic hypothesis only.

The Kit — Acetyl-L-carnitine (acetyl buffer)

Shuttle the fat. Buffer the acetyl. Keep free CoA in play.

Acetyl-L-carnitine is the acetylated form of the molecule that lets long-chain carbon cross the inner membrane — and the mobile buffer that keeps acetyl-CoA from locking pyruvate dehydrogenase shut. Board first — Fuel, Circadian, Strength — then talk with your clinician. Pairing with methylene blue or ALA is mechanistic adjacency, not a page-prescribed stack.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage

Hypothesis (plain): when free carnitine falls or CrAT is inhibited by the lipid it was meant to handle, the cell loses substrate-switch flexibility. Exogenous ALCAR is a hypothesis about restoring that switch — not mitochondrial repair and not a smart-drug claim.

  • Two jobs: CPT shuttle entry for long-chain fat; CrAT acetyl buffer so free CoA and PDH can breathe.
  • Clinical signal (trials cited on Sage): neuropathy symptom / fiber morphometry in year-long trials — not conduction rescue; dementia CGI signal is modest and contested.
  • Escalate: gut intolerance / fishy TMA odor, thyroid-hormone interaction questions, warfarin/INR if relevant — Do not invent milligrams from this page; Do not invent MB/ALA stack doses.

Not a self-treatment guide. Education and metabolic hypothesis only.

The Kit — Rapamycin (borrowed trough · physician application)

A borrowed trough — not a new pillar. Physician application only.

Rapamycin (sirolimus) is not part of the EnSurf system. It is a prescription immunosuppressant that may be discussed as a physician application — a timed off-pole pulse where the endogenous trough never arrives. Weekly intermittent use, if any, is physician-guided only. Never DIY start or stop. Do not invent milligrams from this page. Board first — Fuel, Circadian, Strength — then talk with a clinician who can supervise blood levels.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage

Hypothesis (plain): aging as loss of amplitude between growth and repair. Chronic surplus leaves mTORC1 half-on; repair stays braked. Sirolimus is interesting only as an exogenous pulse of the off-pole — not as a standing Strength agent and not as a fasting substitute you invent from a website.

  • Not EnSurf system: Fuel · Circadian · Strength stay primary. Sirolimus sits, if anywhere under care, at the Circadian–Fuel boundary as a borrowed trough — not beside methylene blue in Strength.
  • Physician only: pharmaceutical-grade material, individual evaluation, professional supervision; blood level — not tablet strength — is the honest exposure measure.
  • Escalate: infection risk, wound healing, mouth ulcers, lipid/glucose shifts, CYP3A4 interactions (including grapefruit) — call the supervising clinician. Do not invent start/stop or milligram schedules from this page.

Education and metabolic hypothesis only. Not a self-treatment guide.

The Kit — Grapefruit (AMPK accent · physician supervision)

A small food-level nudge on the repair side of a physician-directed week. Not a rapamycin substitute.

Grapefruit here is a food-level AMPK accent placed on the repair side of a physician-directed rapamycin week. Rapamycin itself is not part of the EnSurf system; it appears only as a physician application, and its weekly dose is physician-guided only. This placement exists only inside a physician-directed rapamycin week. Your physician and your medication list decide whether it applies at all. Working hypothesis in the Dual Pathway week, not a dosing recommendation and not a schedule to follow on your own. See Rapamycin (physician application).

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage

Drug-interaction warning. Grapefruit irreversibly inactivates intestinal CYP3A4 and can inhibit intestinal P-glycoprotein. The enzyme must be resynthesized. The effect begins within hours and, on average, lasts about three days. Grapefruit juice must not be taken with Rapamune (sirolimus). In clinical work, about 8 ounces of grapefruit juice raised sirolimus exposure on the order of three- to five-fold, with wide individual spread. The same mechanism raises blood levels of many other drugs, including certain statins (simvastatin, lovastatin, and atorvastatin), several calcium-channel blockers, other immunosuppressants, and additional CYP3A4 or P-gp substrates. Do not combine grapefruit with rapamycin, or with any interacting drug, except under the directing physician. Grapefruit is not a substitute for rapamycin.

Physician supervision: Physician supervision is required. The medication list decides whether grapefruit is allowed at all. The labeled instruction for Rapamune is that grapefruit juice must not be taken with it. Statins, many calcium-channel blockers, other immunosuppressants, and other CYP3A4 or P-gp substrates are the same practical hazard.

  • Hypothesis (plain): the fruit’s naringenin is a short, few-hour AMPK nudge. The hypothesis does not say that grapefruit is a dietary rapalog.
  • What it is not: It is not a rapamycin-sparing strategy. Lowering the pill and adding juice is a different hypothesis, and a less predictable one, because the multiplier varies several-fold between people. It is not more effective at two or three fruits. More juice is what begins to reach hepatic CYP3A4 and lengthen the rapamycin tail. The hypothesis uses one fruit.
  • No big claims: It is not a claim about lifespan, lipids, glucose, or immune function. Those belong to rapamycin, and they are monitored, not inferred from a citrus flavonoid.

Education and metabolic hypothesis only. Not medical advice, not a dosing recommendation, and not a self-treatment guide. This is a metabolic hypothesis, not a protocol, a prescription, or a claim of benefit. It is not medical advice. Nothing described here should be done except under the supervision of a physician who knows the full medication list, the dose, and the labs. No rapamycin dose appears here.

The Kit — Endocannabinoids (conservation · recovery)

Conserve after demand. Clear before the night. Native pulses — not a plant stack.

The natural endocannabinoid system is part of EnSurf: a conservation and recovery signal (anandamide / 2-AG at CB1, including mitochondrial CB1) nested with adenosine and nicotinic dashboards. Real load generates intermittent, self-limited tone; recovery clears it. Exogenous cannabinoids are not recommended. Physician-only guided modulation may be noted briefly on deeper pages — never as a DIY protocol from this page.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage

Hypothesis (plain): ECS matches energy status to conservation, storage allocation, protective mitochondrial throttling, and recovery. Intermittent + recovery can protect capacity. Chronic, mistimed, or continuous tone desensitizes receptors, keeps anabolism unresolved, fragments sleep, and suppresses biogenesis.

  • EnSurf native: generate demand through Fuel · Circadian · Strength; let endogenous conservation rise as a pulse; protect the nocturnal window.
  • Not an mTOR switch: ECS can bias mTOR but is not part of mTOR; do not assign plant ligands to “mTOR day” vs “SIRT1 day.”
  • Exogenous: not recommended. Controlled-substance and impairment risks apply. Do not invent doses from this page.

Education and metabolic hypothesis only. Not a recommendation to use cannabis or any cannabinoid.

The Kit — Broccoli Sprouts (timed electrophile pulse)

The sprout is a signal, not a fuel. Pulse on repair days; let it fall before the growth meal.

Raw 3-day broccoli sprouts, chewed, carry glucoraphanin and the enzyme that turns it into sulforaphane — an electrophile that briefly opens the Keap1–Nrf2 defense program. The molecule clears within a day; the enzyme program lingers a day or two. Working hypothesis in the Dual Pathway week, not a dosing recommendation.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage

Working rule (as written in the essay): Days 2–7: 20–40 g raw 3-day broccoli sprouts, chewed at the first meal, after morning light. Day 1: off. Mustard powder only if the sprouts are unavailable and the crucifer has been cooked. The glucoraphanin capsule is a travel spare, and only with an enzyme source. No scheduled NAC on the sprout and training mornings.

  • Cautions: People with active cancer, especially KEAP1- or NFE2L2-altered tumors, should not treat Nrf2 activation as benign. Sulforaphane can inhibit CYP enzymes and may alter drug handling. Iodine deficiency with goiter risk, anticoagulation, and pregnancy are separate reasons to clear a crucifer load with a clinician.
  • NAC is not the same pathway: NAC has its own clinical uses (mucus, an acetaminophen exposure, a clinician-directed course). The essay’s point is narrower: a standing daily NAC dose may be redundant beside protein and sprouts, and can blunt the training and sprout signal on repair mornings. Not a reason to stop NAC a clinician prescribed.
  • Not a cure: the essay does not claim sprouts treat, prevent, or reverse disease.

Education and metabolic hypothesis only. Not medical advice and not a dosing recommendation. Nothing added beyond the essay’s own serving and timing.

The Kit — PQQ (inventory, not flux)

A work order to the nucleus, not a jumper cable. Inventory, not flux.

Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) is a bacterial cofactor. In mouse liver cells it asked the nucleus for more mitochondria, and that request failed when CREB or PGC-1α was removed. It has not been shown to succeed in a human muscle. Working hypothesis on the inventory side of Strength, not a dosing recommendation. Board first — Fuel, Circadian, Strength.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage

  • Cautions: Pyrroloquinoline quinone is not an approved drug. Human evidence for mitochondrial biogenesis is absent. Any use requires individual medical evaluation. Pregnant and lactating women were excluded from the intended use. The European assessment does not clear use in children or in kidney disease.
  • Not an antioxidant story: The antioxidant sentence is a distraction. The useful event, if the cell data hold, is a request for more respiratory inventory.
  • Clearance first: Printing mitochondria without clearing the failed ones increases mass and may not increase function. Diet, light, sleep, and load remain first.

Education and metabolic hypothesis only. Not medical advice and not a dosing recommendation. No dose appears here; trial doses are on Sage as citation context only.

The Kit — Fewer Double Bonds (fish oil · cardiolipin)

Fewer double bonds next to the respiratory chain.

A migrating bird burns fat for hours and does not arrive oxidized; part of the reason is fewer double bonds in its membranes. Most of what we call an omega-3 benefit is displacement of omega-6 and of oxidized seed-oil residue. Some of what we call a fish benefit is not the oil at all. Working hypothesis under Fuel, not a dosing recommendation.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage

  • Three confusions: Do not confuse a displacement therapy with a structural upgrade. Do not confuse the oil with the fish. Do not confuse DHA with the molecule that folds the cristae.
  • Food, not capsules (as written, no amounts): Heart and liver. Linoleic acid, from food, not from a fried oil. Whole fish, occasionally, for the pigment. Intact cardiolipin is not a supplement.
  • The color in the fish: Standard fish oil does not carry astaxanthin, unless a formulator adds it back. See Astaxanthin (Kit).
  • Prescribed omega-3: This page does not tell anyone to stop a fish oil or omega-3 product a clinician prescribed; that decision stays with the prescriber.

Education and metabolic hypothesis only. Not medical advice and not a dosing recommendation. No supplement dosing; nothing added beyond the essay.

The Kit — AREDS3 (RPE engine support vs. interference)

Macular degeneration as a dashboard of a tired RPE engine.

The essay reads intermediate AMD as the visible readout of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) mitochondrial failure, and grades the AREDS3 eye formula against EnSurf. Zinc fits the engine best. Copper is there only to balance zinc. Lutein and zeaxanthin are supportive. The high-dose vitamins C and E fit least, because they can blunt the signals strength training is meant to send. Working hypothesis, not a dosing recommendation. See also Eye and NAD+ precursors (Kit).

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage

  • Cautions: This document presents a metabolic hypothesis integrating available clinical trial data from the Age-Related Eye Disease Studies (AREDS and AREDS2) with mechanistic biochemistry and the EnSurf framework of mitochondrial optimization. It is not medical advice, does not constitute a recommendation for or against any supplement, and is not a substitute for individualized clinical judgment. The original AREDS and AREDS2 trials established efficacy for the tested formulas in specific high-risk populations with intermediate age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AREDS3 is a commercial product formulation that has not been tested in a new randomized outcome trial. Individual responses vary. Consult a qualified physician before making changes to supplementation, particularly in the presence of diagnosed AMD or other medical conditions.
  • Engine first: In both cases the primary engine repair remains the lifestyle protocol; AREDS3 is, at best, a secondary, stage-specific adjunct.
  • Smokers and former smokers: avoid beta-carotene eye formulas, a lung-cancer concern in former smokers; the AREDS3 formula does not contain beta-carotene.
  • Your eye doctor decides: Do not start, stop, or change an eye formula from a Surfer card.

Education and metabolic hypothesis only. Not medical advice and not a dosing recommendation. No dose appears here; formula amounts are on Coach and Sage as information only.

Surf Judge

Every surfer falls. Every surfer also catches clean ones. Learning to read the ride is how you grow.

Wipeouts are not the whole story. The Surf Judge is how we look at disease and recovery, setbacks and strong seasons — judgment of the ride without shame and without false guarantees. Education and working hypothesis, not a treatment protocol.

On Sage, this section is called The Good Doctor, with fuller disease-management essays.

The Surfer pages below are outlines (plus Surfer cards where available). Coach pages are shorter essays derived from Sage. Sage pages are Val Zudans, MD’s philosophy-of-medicine essays.

Overview: Surfer Coach Sage

MB, aspirin, sulindac, catecholamine modulators — education only; no dosing from Surfer. Board first (Fuel · Circadian · Strength); Kit last.

Philosophy of Medicine

Chronic “disease” is often a rescue left on — dashboard, not engine.

Acute medicine is excellent at rescue. Most chronic syndromes are biology in compensatory mode because ATP capacity fell short of mismatch load. Ask what energy work the body can no longer do before naming a lifelong drug target. Fix Fuel, light/sleep, and strength first. Pills that only silence the warning light are last — except when minutes matter. This is Surf Judge, not a treatment plan.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage

  • Acute medicine is excellent at rescue. Chronic “syndromes” are often the dashboard, not the engine.
  • Ask what energy work the body can no longer do, before naming a lifelong drug target.
  • Fix fuel, light/sleep, and strength first. Pills that only silence the warning light are last, not first.
  • One field — Shore / Surf Judge language names orientation, not a second “mind stuff” beside mitochondria.

Aging

Aging is the engines making less ATP — not a pill problem first.

Fewer, older, less efficient mitochondria. Hallmarks light up when capacity can’t pay maintenance. Antioxidants and clock resets without Fuel, light/sleep, and strength often chase the dashboard. Keep the board solid. One “anti-aging” pill on a mismatched life is not a plan. This is Surf Judge, not a treatment plan — and not a reverse-aging guarantee.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage

  • Aging is the engine making less ATP over time — fewer, older, less efficient mitochondria.
  • Keep the engine: eat real food, keep a day/night rhythm, lift heavy things, sleep.
  • One “anti-aging” pill on top of a mismatched life is chasing the dashboard.
  • One field — Shore / Surf Judge language names orientation, not a second “mind stuff” beside mitochondria.

Cardiac

Heart trouble often starts as energy mismatch — plaque as wall-mitochondria repair, orthostatic racing as compensation.

High lipids and a fast heart on stand can be dashboards — sometimes high dashboard with a healthy engine. The engine is how cells in the wall, heart muscle, and nerves burn fuel. Foam cells are desperate macrophages, not a morality play. Keep Fuel, light/sleep, and strength. Cardiology owns minutes — chest pain or syncope is EMS, not a cleanse. This is Surf Judge, not a treatment plan — and not a plaque- or POTS-reversal guarantee.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage

  • Plaque is often a repair record of energy failure in the vessel wall — mitochondria upstream, not “cholesterol as a poison.”
  • Orthostatic tachycardia can be compensation under gravity when cellular energy reserve is short — not “anxiety as the disease” first.
  • High lipids and high standing heart rate can be dashboard readings. Some run high lipids with little plaque when the engine is healthy.
  • Walk, lift, sleep, and eat in a human pattern before treating a lab or a rate in isolation. Cardiology owns minutes.

Cancer

Many cancers look like a cell that lost its clean power plant — then selection locked in backup fuel.

Mutations matter; they often stick because of the energy crisis, not instead of it. After a polyp is removed, the gut field can stay high-risk for years — clear the light, still train the engine. Keep Fuel, light/sleep, and strength beside surveillance. Oncology owns diagnosis and treatment clocks — this is terrain, not a cure clip. This is Surf Judge, not a treatment plan — and not a skip-chemo or skip-colonoscopy order.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage

  • Many cancers look like a cell that lost its clean power plant and switched to crude backup fuel.
  • Mutations matter; they often arrive after the energy crisis, not instead of it.
  • Obesity, diabetes, and aging share mitochondrial stress that shapes the selective field.
  • A polyp can be a dashboard light; removing it does not automatically fix the colonocyte—mito—microbiome field.
  • This is a hypothesis, not a treatment plan. Get competent oncology / GI care.

Diabetes

High blood sugar is often a warning light — mitochondria thirst while fuel sits locked away.

Plenty of glucose in blood and fat in stores, but resistance and high insulin keep the engine from drinking — “water, water everywhere.” Fix Fuel, light/sleep, and strength before living only on a glucose-lowering dashboard. Do not change insulin or other glucose drugs from this page. Lows and ketoacidosis are emergencies. This is Surf Judge, not a prescription.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage

  • High blood sugar is often a warning light, not the broken part. The engine is not turning food into ATP cleanly.
  • Plenty of fuel in the blood and in fat stores, but the mitochondria cannot drink — “water, water everywhere.”
  • Fix fuel, day/night rhythm, and strength before living on a glucose-lowering dashboard. This is a hypothesis, not a prescription.
  • Do not change insulin or other glucose-lowering drugs from a Surfer card. Hypoglycemia and ketoacidosis are emergencies.

Obesity

Stored fat is often a defended buffer — appetite drugs can lower the scale while the engine still sags.

Obesity is not only calories-in math. When mitochondria cannot handle the modern fuel mix, the organism defends higher fat stores. GLP-1 and kin can empty the plate and move the scale; lean mass often leaves with the waist, and weight often returns when the override stops. Fix Fuel, light/sleep, and strength before living only on an appetite-override dashboard. Do not start a multi-day fast from this page. Do not stop or start weight-loss drugs from a Surfer card. This is Surf Judge, not a prescription.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage

  • Stored fat is often a defended buffer when the engine cannot handle fuel, not a simple calories-in math error.
  • Appetite drugs can lower the scale while lean mass and the engine still sag. Stopping the drug often returns the weight.
  • Repair the engine (food pattern, fasting only under real medical watch, lift, sleep). Do not start a fast from a webpage.
  • Do not stop or start GLP-1 or other weight-loss drugs from a Surfer card. Keep your clinician on every change.

Thyroid

Many “thyroid” stories are energy conservation written onto the lab panel.

TSH and free hormones can be dashboards. The engine is how cells burn fuel, convert T4 to T3, and respond at the tissue. Keep Fuel, light/sleep, and strength. Endocrinology owns true gland failure and emergencies — this is Surf Judge, not a treatment plan — and not a levothyroxine-stop order or lab-reversal guarantee.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage

  • Thyroid labs are often a warning light of systemic energy shortfall — not always “the broken gland” as the whole story.
  • Low T3 can be conservation matching rate to capacity (illness, deep deficit) — not always missed medication.
  • Fix fuel, day/night rhythm, and strength before living only on a TSH titration dashboard.
  • Do not stop thyroid meds from a Surfer card. Myxedema and thyroid storm are emergencies.

GI

You are a holobiont — many “gut” stories are partnership failure on the dashboard.

Mitochondria inside, gut biota outside. Ferritin, acid, and autoimmune gastritis can be warning lights of energy and symbiont shortfall. Prefer fermented MACs and human Fuel over probiotic theater alone. Keep light/sleep and strength. Gastroenterology owns bleeds, infection, and cancer clocks — this is Surf Judge, not a treatment plan — and not an iron/PPI-stop order or reversal guarantee.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage

  • Gut biota is a primary ongoing symbiont — not an optional accessory.
  • Colon cells prefer butyrate from fermenters; UPF and antibiotic pulses can starve the partnership.
  • Autoimmune gastritis and stubborn low ferritin often mark parietal energy failure and malabsorption — replace what is missing, restore the engine.
  • Do not stop GI meds or iron/B12 from a Surfer card. Bleeding and acute abdomen are emergencies.

Reproductive / Infertility

Eggs and sperm are high-watt engines — many “hormone” stories are energy failure on the dashboard.

Oocytes, sperm midpieces, and endometrium burn serious ATP. Age, obesity, and insulin resistance raise infertility risk in both sexes when mitochondria fall short. Keep Fuel, light/sleep, and strength. Reproductive endocrinology owns ectopic, OHSS, and time-sensitive clocks — this is Surf Judge, not a treatment plan — and not a fertility-med-stop order or reversal guarantee.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage

  • Unexplained, age-related, and metabolic infertility often share an upstream cellular energy crisis.
  • AMH, semen reports, and PGT-A are dashboards — map ≠ terrain.
  • ART can bypass barriers; it cannot fully restore a starved mitochondrial engine.
  • Do not stop fertility meds from a Surfer card. No peptide/HRT/GLP-1 fertility protocols.

Immune

Defense is expensive — tired mitochondria make noisy, unfinished inflammation.

Immunity is not only “boost or suppress.” Orchestrators conduct; effectors clear. When the engine is strained, mobilization never gets the all-clear. Tick-vectored Lyme and Alpha-Gal can dump a huge immune bill on a thin engine. Sleep, food quality, gut partners, daylight, and strength train the board more than another stack. Immune drugs and antibiotics can save tissue; in this model, they may work better after Fuel, light, and strength give surplus. Do not stop or start biologics, steroids, vaccines, antimicrobials, or epinephrine/avoidance plans from a Surfer card. This is Surf Judge, not a prescription.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage

  • Defense is expensive. Tired mitochondria make noisy, unfinished inflammation.
  • Tick-vectored Lyme and Alpha-Gal are load stories on the same engine — not separate silos.
  • Sleep, food, gut partners, daylight, and strength train orchestration more than another supplement stack.
  • Immune drugs and antibiotics help the dashboard; keep your clinician on every change. LMR is one imperfect dashboard — not a DIY protocol.

Brain

High-watt board. Tired mitochondria make messy clearance.

The brain is a high-watt organ. Mood, memory, and “neuro” disease track fuel and sleep. When the engine is strained, protein handling gets messy and microglial cleanup never finishes. In this model, ketones, daylight, and strength may help because they feed or spare the engine — not as magic. Neuro drugs can save function; in this model, they may work better after Fuel, light, and strength give surplus. Do not stop anticonvulsants, Parkinson meds, or dementia drugs from a Surfer card. This is Surf Judge, not a prescription.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage · Sibling: Neurodevelopment

Sleep is part of the engine. Your brain is a high-energy organ, and in my working hypothesis, sleep is tied to its memory consolidation, mitochondrial cleanup, and hormonal reset. So bright evenings and night-shift chaos are not neutral for it. The care is plain: morning outdoor light, darkness at night, consistent sleep timing, and coherent eating windows. Snoring, gasping, or heavy daytime sleepiness deserve a medical evaluation. There's more on sleep and the brain in Coach — Brain.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage

  • The brain is a high-watt organ. Mood, memory, and “neuro” disease track fuel and sleep.
  • Tired mitochondria make messy protein handling and unfinished clearance — plaques often tell the story; the engine writes it.
  • In this model, ketones, daylight, and strength may help because they feed or spare the engine — not as magic.
  • Neuro drugs help the dashboard; keep your clinician on every change. Do not stop CNS meds from a Surfer card.

Neurodevelopment (Autism ↔ Trisomy 21)

Developing brains and oocytes burn ATP — short engines rewire or re-tune.

Autism often looks like alternative wiring when gestational fuel, redox, and one-carbon support fall short. Trisomy 21 often looks like an oocyte that could not finish meiosis cleanly — then dosage changes re-tune metabolism so the organism can keep going. In this hypothesis, maternal Fuel, light/sleep, and metabolic health are levers worth studying for future pregnancies. Keep genetics, developmental pediatrics, and neurology. Do not stop anticonvulsants or psych meds from a Surfer card. No peptide/HRT/GLP-1 neurodev protocols. Not a vaccine-primary claim. This is Surf Judge, not a prescription.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage · Sibling: Brain (neurodegeneration)

  • Autism ↔ Trisomy 21 share maternal energy shortfall patterns — different windows (gestation vs germline).
  • Alternative wiring and genomic re-tuning are compensations that keep going — with real trade-offs and real strengths.
  • In this hypothesis, preconception Fuel, light/sleep, and metabolic health are levers worth studying for future pregnancies — not blame.
  • Do not stop CNS or thyroid meds from a Surfer card. Not a vaccine-primary claim.

Dermatology

Costly signals. Short engines ration pigment first.

Hair color, thickness, glow, and barrier burn ATP. When capacity falls short, pigment and shaft size get cut — temples often early. Angry skin and some “autoimmune” rashes can be the same mismatch in different tissue. Creams, hormone blockers, and immune drugs help the dashboard; in this model, they may work better after Fuel, light, and strength give surplus. Skin cancer sits at the far end of that ladder — removing a spot does not fix the field. Get real care; this is Surf Judge, not a treatment plan.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage

  • Hair color, thickness, and skin glow cost energy. When the engine is short, pigment and shaft size go first.
  • Graying, thinning, angry skin, and some “autoimmune” rashes can be the same mismatch, shown in different tissues.
  • Creams, hormone blockers, and immune drugs can help the warning lights. In this model, they may work better after food, light, and strength have given the skin surplus ATP.
  • Skin cancer sits at the far end of that same ladder. Removing a spot does not fix the field. Get real care; this is a map, not a treatment plan.

Eye

High-watt readable organ. Tired mitochondria make messy clearance.

The eye is a high-watt organ with little slack. Tired mitochondria make messy RPE cleanup, capillary dropout that asks for new vessels, and nerves that cannot tolerate pressures they once ignored. Glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retina share energy and redox stress — not only “eye pressure” or sugar. Daylight, fuel quality, and strength train the engine. Drops and anti-VEGF can save sight. In this model, a body with energy to spare may respond better, though that’s unproven and never a reason to delay or skip treatment. Do not stop glaucoma drops or skip an injection from a Surfer card. Sudden vision loss or curtain floaters = urgent care. This is Surf Judge, not a prescription.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage

  • The retina is one of the hungriest tissues in the body. Eyes often fail early when the engine is tired.
  • Glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retina share energy and redox stress, not only “eye pressure” or sugar.
  • Drops and anti-VEGF protect your sight now; fuel, light, and strength train the engine. Keep your ophthalmologist on every change.
  • Do not stop glaucoma drops or anti-VEGF from a Surfer card. Sudden vision loss / curtain floaters = urgent care.

Dental

Mouth is a canary. Short engines show in the gums first.

Gums, bone, sockets, and jaw form burn ATP. When capacity falls short, bleeding and bone loss look like “bacteria winning” — often a rescue program left on. Crowding often means soft food and weak metabolic signal in growth windows. Brush and see a dentist. Also fix Fuel, light, and strength. Fluoride can hide a warning light; it does not rebuild the engine. This is Surf Judge, not a treatment plan.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage

  • The mouth is a canary, like the eye. Gums, bone, and healing report how well the engine makes ATP.
  • Bleeding gums and bone loss are a rescue program left on too long — not “bacteria attacking” as the whole story.
  • Crowded teeth often mean the jaws did not get enough chew-load and fuel while growing.
  • Brush and see a dentist. Also fix food, light, and strength. Fluoride can hide a warning light; it does not rebuild the engine.

Signals — Hormones, Peptides, Energy Dashboards

Messages need terrain. Energy dashboards need recovery.

Hormones and peptides are messages. Adenosine reports charge; caffeine lifts a brake; nicotine amplifies demand; endocannabinoids conserve and recover. They work when the terrain can hear them. Tired mitochondria make resistance, conservation, and emergency tone look like primary “hormone imbalance.” Sleep, daylight, fuel quality, and strength train the engine. Replacement and agonists can be bridges and rescues; in this model, they may work better after surplus. Continuous stimulant occupancy without recovery is just more deficit. Do not stop insulin, thyroid, or steroids from a Surfer card. No Surfer nicotine, cannabis, or alcohol dosing. Acute endocrine emergencies = urgent care. This is Surf Judge, not a prescription.

Depth: Surfer · Coach · Sage

Not a happiness molecule — a flux manager.

In EnSurf, serotonin helps match oxygen, fuel, and spending so expensive tissue does not bankrupt the ATP ledger. Gut and platelets work hard first; brain mood labels come later. Do not start, stop, or taper antidepressants or stack psychedelics / methylene blue from this page. Psychiatric and medical emergencies belong with clinicians.

Surfer · Coach · Sage

  • Hormones and peptides are messages. They work when the terrain can hear them.
  • Adenosine is the short-wave energy dashboard; cortisol is the daily wave — function shapes the curve.
  • Caffeine temporarily lifts the adenosine brake; hormesis needs recovery (see also Fuel fin: Caffeine).
  • Resistance and odd panels often mean a tired engine — not a morality play about “broken glands” as the whole story.
  • Restore food, light, sleep, and strength before adding a signal or continuous stimulant that pretends the engine is fine.
  • Do not stop insulin, thyroid, or steroids from a Surfer card. Diabetes and Obesity have their own wipeouts.
