Sage — Music as Temporal Coherence
The Shore · Circadian
Music may not be an external ornament applied to an already-constituted organism. It may be pure temporal patterning that requires no external semantic referent. Its intelligibility may be the structure of coherence itself.
Music appears in every human society studied, and across cultures the sound of a song reliably signals its context: soothing an infant, dancing, healing (Mehr et al. 2019). Whether the preference for simple-ratio 'consonant' intervals is built in is less clear; one study of a remote Amazonian community found no such preference, suggesting culture plays a large part (McDermott et al. 2016).
Bach’s counterpoint may supply the clearest example of many independent lines held together in one order. Counterpoint does not collapse into monophony nor dissolve into noise. In his first two or three years at Leipzig, Bach produced new cantatas at a remarkable pace, at times one a week (Marshall 2026); his annual cantata cycles date mainly from 1723–25 (Schulze 2024). That pace is the practical counterpart: excellence as trained habit.
Active musical performance by a living performer may work as continuous prediction and correction: the performer keeps predicting the next sound, hears the error, and corrects it in real time. Listening supplies an external pattern to which the body may entrain. Performance closes the loop: prediction, error, and correction occur inside the same medium that is being shaped.
Short-scale acoustic patterning may preferentially modulate fast systems; longer-scale nested patterning may entrain slower systems. A single interval or phrase is a short-scale coherence event; a movement is a longer-scale nesting of those events. Bach’s counterpoint already contains nested timescales.
What the studies show so far
In kennelled dogs, classical music has been linked to higher heart-rate variability and more time lying quietly, although dogs got used to it within days (Bowman et al. 2015). Smaller studies in horses, cats and rodents report calming effects that vary with species, the kind of music and the setting (Wiśniewska et al. 2019; Hampton et al. 2020; Kühlmann et al. 2018), so a single shared physiological signature across species has not been shown.
In one small cell-culture study, a recording of Chinese five-element music was reported to raise ATP and glutathione and lower reactive oxygen species in a single human kidney cell line (HEK293T), while heavy-metal music had the opposite effect on oxidative stress; classical music changed cell growth but not ATP or ROS (Feng et al. 2022). These are early, unreplicated laboratory findings, and they do not show that listening to music changes cellular energy in the body.
Small studies suggest that older adults who take up an instrument may better preserve some aspects of working memory and brain structure. In one small, non-randomized four-year follow-up, those who kept playing held up better than those who stopped (Wang et al. 2025), though in the largest randomized trial a music-listening course produced similar gains (Marie et al. 2023), and reviews call the evidence preliminary (Espinosa et al. 2025). Wind players have been reported to have stronger breathing measures than population norms (Darabseh et al. 2026), and singing groups may help some people with chronic lung disease feel better (McNamara et al. 2017), but trials are few and small. One small study using near-infrared spectroscopy found higher oxidative (mitochondrial) capacity in the forearm muscles that move the ring and little fingers in eight pianists than in non-players, consistent with a local training effect, though it compared groups at one point in time rather than following people as they learned (Luquire & McCully 2019).
Studies of music listening more often report short-term changes in heart-rate variability than consistent changes in cortisol (Mojtabavi et al. 2020; de Witte et al. 2020), although much of this research is small and at risk of bias, and some reviews find no reliable effect at all (Adiasto et al. 2022).
Light is the body clock's main time cue, but in two small laboratory studies from one research group, a recording of bird song with a classical-music background shifted the timing of the melatonin and core-temperature rhythms by about an hour: later when played during the biological night, earlier when played in the biological morning (Goel 2005; Goel 2006). It is not yet clear whether the sound acted on the clock itself or worked by keeping people alert, and the finding has not been widely replicated.
