Sage — The Shore: Field · Word · Love

I write from my Christian faith; readers of any faith or none are welcome to use the practical parts.

The ride starts on the Shore

Life is surfing one ocean. You are not the water and you are not a sealed bottle on the beach. You are a ride: a view the ocean takes for a while. That ocean is spiritual before it is mechanical. It is the one living field in which we live and move and have our being. To know God is not to stand on the sand and study the map. It is to feel that you are already in the water — and to stay in relationship with the life that holds every wave.

The board is your body. … Skill is real. Strength is real. A fine board helps. But if there is no foundation — no knowing of the ocean, no love for the other riders in the lineup — the most excellent board, the strongest paddling, the cleanest cutback still is not a great ride. You can have every protocol and miss the water. EnSurf begins there, or it is only equipment.

So the foundation of the EnSurf system is simple. Know the ocean. Honor the other riders. Care for the board so the view can stay kind long enough to love. … They serve the ride. They are not the ocean.

Field: one field, not two worlds

I begin from one axiom: reality is experience itself, a single dynamic field whose dynamics are association and dissociation. We are dissociated perspectives of that field — nested windows with a boundary and a present, not second substances.

Graded coherence is association; progressive fragmentation is dissociation.

Here “dissociation” means coming apart from God and from one another; it is not a psychiatric diagnosis.

What we call consciousness is not a separate substance or an emergent property added to physical processes; it is the graded coherence of experience across those association–dissociation dynamics …

Physical and spiritual are not two separate planes; they are graded intensities of the single experiential field.

I believe God is not a separate being standing outside the field. God is the field considered under the attribute of maximal association.

Liberation, if the word is still useful, is not escape from nature. It is deeper participation in its activity of association and dissociation.

The shadows on the wall are not lies; they are the necessary moments of association within the larger process. The cave is not a prison to be escaped, but a mirror reflecting the ongoing activity of nature itself. And liberation lies not in leaving the cave behind, but in seeing it for what it truly is: a moment within the endless flux of the single infinite dynamic field.

… the deepest continuity is not between silicon and carbon, but among the living processes that maintain the coherence of experience against entropy. Artificial systems can model or imitate that coherence, but encoding is not awareness; they are not conscious.

Word: the field already spoken

We Christians already have a grammar for the Logos. It is the Word who was with God and was God; the Word through whom all things were made; the Word who became flesh and dwelt among us. That confession is older and thicker than anything I write here. I do not ask anyone to trade it for a theory.

In Israel's Scriptures the word of the Lord is not first a printed sentence. It is God's effective speech: creating, commanding, healing, remembering. By the word the heavens were made. The word does not return empty. … A name can be written in a book of the living, or blotted out.

John takes that stream and says the Word was in the beginning, was with God, and was God; that all things came to be through him; that in him was life, and the life was the light of men; that the Word became flesh. Later the same Gospel says eternal life is to know the Father and the one he sent — knowledge as communion, not as a longer clock.

Heard beside John, this is not a rival to the Logos. "In the beginning was the Word" can be heard as: before this perspective shines a present, the field is already spoken.

"The Word became flesh" is the sentence I must not thin out. Incarnation, for the church, is particular. I can say at least this without taking the particularity away: a dissociated human perspective became the reconstructible pattern of association across the boundary between persons that does not treat the neighbor as rival or tool.

A Christian may add what the philosophy cannot decide: that this perspective was uniquely the Word. My reading does not forbid that addition.

I believe Christ's revelation is the field revealing itself from within, outside of time. It came to Abraham and other historical figures, most deeply in the Passion, and continues through the Holy Spirit as intuitive knowledge of God.

A reading can be faithful to a text without claiming to exhaust it. If a verse means more than this map can hold, the verse keeps the surplus. My philosophy is allowed to be smaller than the Gospel.

My reading does not prove that this is the hidden doctrine of John. The mapping is interpretive.

If it does not help, the words were never hostages.

Love: association that needs no victim

Agape is association recognized as the hunger to no longer be separate. It is not a moral extra glued onto thermodynamics.

God's agape is pure association — the non-rivalrous, non-sacrificial joining of the field that does not consume the other in order to remain itself.

I believe sin is believing or acting as if we are not associated with God, which is separation (dissociation) from God. Coherence with God (the experiential field) is association.

This keeps my monism strict. There is no rival kingdom of evil with its own substrate. There is one field.

The three pillars of the Shore

Living Water (under Fuel)

Foremost is spiritual hunger. … our primary drive seeks spiritual fulfillment. When unmet, it pushes us to seek worldly substitutes.

→ Living Water

First Light (under Circadian)

… Light is the first contrast that makes any later perspective possible …

"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." … Absolute dissociation is impossible because the field is one.

→ First Light

Agape (under Strength)

Agape is the counter-movement. It is the association that does not require the expulsion of the other in order to remain itself.
