Dissociation of Mitochondrial Coherence, Sin as Dissociation, and Agape as the Restoration of Association
Here “dissociation” means coming apart from God and from one another; it is not a psychiatric diagnosis.
1. Framing
Biblical tzara'ath is never merely a dermatological condition. It is the visible, progressive sign of dissociation that isolates a person from the community and from covenant life with God. In the terms I use, the base reality is the single experiential field structured by association and dissociation. Graded coherence is association; progressive fragmentation is dissociation.
Sin is dissociation: the mimetic turning away from the infinite field of association (God, Logos, Nature) into rivalrous, sacrificial patterns that fracture coherence at every scale. God's agape is pure association — the non-rivalrous, non-sacrificial joining of the field that does not consume the other in order to remain itself.
Jesus treats leprosy as the public metaphor of this spiritual reality, not as a verdict on the person who is sick. The physical healings are real, yet they are the outer face of a deeper spiritual miracle: the revelation of how human beings are to associate with God according to the Girardian mimetic model perfected in Christ.
The biology of leprosy is on the Leprosy page.
2. Sin as Dissociation, Agape as Association
In the Girardian reading that I integrate, human desire is mimetic. We learn what to want by imitating others. When the model becomes a rival, desire turns acquisitive and sacrificial. The community restores fragile coherence by designating a scapegoat — someone whose visible "uncleanness" can be expelled so that the rest may remain associated with one another.
Tzara'ath is the paradigmatic biblical form of this mechanism. The person is made the living sign of dissociation: surface rupture that spreads, threatens the communal body, and must be isolated. The priest's examination and the required separation are the ritualization of the scapegoat logic.
Sin, on this account, is precisely this mimetic dissociation — the turning from the infinite field of association into rivalrous patterns that require victims. God's agape is the opposite movement: pure association that does not need a scapegoat to remain coherent. It is the non-rivalrous imitation of the Father that Jesus both teaches and enacts.
3. Jesus and the Spiritual Miracle
When Jesus touches the leper (Mark 1:40–45 and parallels), He does far more than heal a disease of the skin. He enters the space of maximal dissociation without Himself becoming dissociated. He refuses the sacrificial logic that says "touching the unclean makes one unclean." Instead He associates with the dissociated one and, by that association, restores coherence at every level:
- Metabolic and neural coherence returns (sensation, integrity of form).
- Social coherence returns (the person is sent back to the priests and to the community).
- Spiritual coherence returns: the individual is re-associated with the Logos.
This is the Girardian revelation in action. Jesus does not participate in the mimetic cycle of exclusion. He absorbs the dissociation (taking the place of the scapegoat) without reciprocating rivalry or violence. The physical healing is the visible sign of the deeper miracle: the demonstration that association with God is possible precisely by imitating this non-sacrificial agape. The leper is no longer the necessary victim who holds the community together by his exclusion; he becomes the living proof that the community can be held together by inclusion into the field of agape.
The miracle is therefore spiritual; the healing is how it appears in form. The restoration of mitochondrial and neural coherence is the bodily enactment of the same movement that restores the person to the infinite field of association. Physical and spiritual are not two separate planes; they are graded intensities of the single experiential field.
4. Implications
Leprosy, both biblical and modern, exposes the structure of dissociation. The bacterium shows us, at the scale of the cell, the pattern of dissociation that sin is at the scale of the person and the community, without implying that the sick person has sinned: the fracturing of coherence, the loss of the boundary signal (pain / conscience), the creation of isolated compartments that protect the dissociating agent, and the progressive exile of the whole.
Agape is the counter-movement. It is the association that does not require the expulsion of the other in order to remain itself. Jesus' repeated association with lepers is the mimetic model of how human beings are to associate with God: by entering the places of dissociation without becoming rivalrous or sacrificial, and by allowing the Logos to restore coherence from within.
The metabolic hypothesis and the Girardian-spiritual reading are therefore not parallel tracks. They are the same pattern appearing at different scales of the single field of experience. Mitochondrial dissociation is the cellular face of the same dynamics that produce scapegoating and spiritual exile. The healing touch of Christ is the restoration of association at every scale simultaneously — metabolic, neural, social, and spiritual.
This is the deeper miracle.
