Sage — HydroEye, Energy Flux, and the Membrane Fork
Hypothesis-grade application of the energy-flux model to an oral GLA + EPA/DHA formula. Not a treatment guideline. Not an advertisement. HydroEye® is a ScienceBased Health product; EnSurf does not manufacture it. HydroEye is sold through MDVite, EnSurf LLC’s store; this essay is education, not a sales pitch.
1. The claim in one sentence
Biology is energy flux. The ocular surface is an open flux system writing a three-layer film from two secretory engines. HydroEye does not raise mitochondrial voltage and does not grow cristae. It edits the acyl identity of membranes and steers an eicosanoid fork (DGLA → PGE1 rather than arachidonate → PGE2) so less of the cell’s ATP is wasted on inflammatory leak and more of the gland’s work becomes usable tears. That is Fuel + Membrane functionality. It is not ETC conditioning.
2. Energy flux, restated for a wet surface
EnSurf: food electrons enter at high energy; ETC lowers that state, pumps protons, ATP synthase collects a toll. When ATP demand exceeds capacity, the nest compensates: less work, more glycolysis, more ROS, more apoptosis pressure. Chronic compensatory emergency is the metabolic spine of disease.
The eye has recyclable cells (surface epithelium) and lifelong cells (RGCs). Lacrimal acini and meibocytes are secretory engines: ATP + acyl-CoA become a product that leaves the cell (tears, meibum). If the product is the wrong lipid species, or the gland spends ATP on HLA-DR inflammation instead of secretion, the film fails in public while the mitochondrion fails in private. Artificial tears replace volume for minutes. They do not rewrite the engine.
Dry eye in this model is unstable film + hyperosmolar stress + evaporative heat/water leak + inflammatory drain. Osmolarity is a concentration; evaporation is a flux; inflammation is wasted capacity.
3. Membrane functionality is not “80% of all membranes are mitochondrial”
Hepatocyte: mitochondrial membranes ~39–40% of total cell membrane (OMM ~7%, IMM ~32%). Pancreatic acinar: mito share ~21% because ER dominates. Near 80%: IMM protein:lipid ratio, and fraction of mitochondrial lipid in the IMM because cristae multiply IMM area ~4–5× over OMM.
Scope: membrane functionality applies to every mitochondrion, not only eyes. Geometry vs identity: ETC capacity/cell ≈ N_mito × A_cristae/mito × ρ_complexes × η_membrane. Dietary EPA/DHA move η (human muscle 12-wk fish oil: EPA/DHA into mito membranes, better ADP Km, no change in ETC subunits or max respiration). Loss of CL collapses cristae; adding GLA/EPA does not grow folds. GLA is a weak CL remodeling substrate vs linoleate or DHA. Human heart CL still prefers L4CL.
HydroEye is not a biogenesis or cristae pill.
4. Inflammatory pathway is a fork
LA → GLA needs Δ6-desaturase (slow with age/IR/alcohol). GLA skips that. GLA → DGLA → PGE1 / 15-HETrE OR Δ5-desaturase → AA → PGE2/LTB4. EPA competes at Δ5 so DGLA is less likely to become AA. DHA is membrane/resolvin, not the PGE1 fork.
Why DREAM/VITAL-DED can fail at ~1g marine ω-3 while GLA+EPA still moves HLA-DR: different question, different fork. Sheppard–Pflugfelder 2013 Cornea: n=38 postmenopausal, 6 mo HydroEye vs sunflower placebo; OSDI up, HLA-DR suppressed, corneal smoothness held. Small/narrow. Aragona Sjögren: oral LA+GLA raised tear PGE1; stop pills, PGE1 falls, surface relapses.
5. Why the eye looks special (it isn’t)
Same fork in synovium, skin, nerve. RA needs grams GLA; neuropathy hundreds of mg. Eye lights up because lacrimal unit uses PGE1 as local signal you can pipette; DED is an open mucosal flux loop; a camera on 12 cm² is a better assay than soleus. Literature dose context only — not EnSurf Rx/protocol voice.
6. Pillar map
Fuel: partial (scarce GLA + some EPA/DHA); wild fish + displace industrial LA remains systemic membrane edit. Membrane: acyl identity yes; cristae area no. ETC: indirect only (less inflammatory/osmolar ROS load). MB/light/load own voltage. Circadian/biogenesis/conditioning: not this tool.
7. What this is not
Not an EnSurf-manufactured product. Not a substitute for lid mechanics, cyclosporine when T-cell drive is the sink, or RGC protection. Not “omega-6 is good now.” Eye is not a primary pillar here. Combining HydroEye with prescription dry-eye drops is a question for your own physician.
8. Strength of evidence
What the model and small studies support: flux model; membrane census; EPA/DHA into mito phospholipids; GLA poor CL substrate; GLA→DGLA→PGE1 fork; EPA biases against AA; tear PGE1 / HLA-DR in small trials; fish-oil-alone pop trials failed DED endpoints.
Not claimed: that HydroEye increases cristae, mitochondrial density, or ETC volume; that it treats glaucoma; that GLA is unique to the eyes; that it is an AMD or AREDS2 formula. EnSurf does not manufacture HydroEye.
Disclaimer: educational model, not medical advice; not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
Closing: Flux first. Then the fork. Then the bottle.
A working hypothesis, open to correction and revised as new evidence arrives. Last revised October 17, 2026.
