Sage — Energy Phase (Circadian Pillar)

This pillar sits on the Shore: First Light.

This document is a working hypothesis. It is intended to serve as the circadian pillar of the EnSurf mitochondrial optimization system. It is not a claim that every link has been proven. It is a claim that the links form a single, testable, parsimonious account of how human energy management is timed. Nothing here is medical advice.

Abstract

Energy Phase is the hypothesis that human metabolism is not a steady engine running at a constant set-point, but a nested, time-structured system whose phase of operation is selected by four timing sub-pillars: light, fuel, hormesis, and temperature. Circadian biology is the scheduler of that system. It is not a separate lifestyle pillar. It is the timing layer that keeps those inputs on the schedule mitochondria were selected to expect.

The ancestral environment supplied a joint prior. Food electrons arrived in an active phase. Mechanical load arrived in an active phase. A broadband solar photon field — rich in infrared, changing with solar elevation, collapsing at night — bathed the organism during that same phase. Restore processes (mitophagy, membrane repair, glycogen and creatine-phosphate recharge, sleep) arrived when the field went dark and load fell. Modern environments split the joint prior: IR-poor indoor spectra by day, bright narrow light at night, constant feeding, and sitting. Energy Phase names that split as phase error.

The hypothesis incorporates, without requiring, the emerging photometabolism argument: infrared photons near the solar photon-number maximum (~0.75 eV) can bias Marcus electron-transfer kinetics in mitochondria by altering nuclear-configuration populations at donor–acceptor crossings. That argument supplies a physical reason why light belongs in the fuel prior rather than only in the clock prior. Energy Phase remains intact even if photometabolism is later narrowed, because light, feeding, capacity stressors (hormesis), and thermal swing are independently established zeitgebers and energy inputs.

EnSurf therefore treats circadian alignment as energy-environment matching over time. The five mitochondrial levers — ETC function, density (biogenesis), quality (mitophagy), volume (tissue mass under load), and fuel — are the contents of that environment. Energy Phase is how they are scheduled.

1. Purpose and place in EnSurf

EnSurf organizes mitochondrial optimization around five levers:

  • ETC function — enzyme oxidation, electron-transfer kinetics, and the memory of prior free-energy minimizations.
  • Density — biogenesis; how many engines are present per cell.
  • Quality — mitophagy; whether damaged engines are removed.
  • Volume — tissue-level mitochondrial mass, driven largely by strength and locomotor load.
  • Fuel — proper human diet and light.

A sixth sentence has always sat beside those levers: circadian alignment is surfing the dynamic waves of energy. This paper makes that sentence into a pillar. It defines Energy Phase as the formal object of that pillar.

The purpose is conceptual unification, not a new supplement, device, or protocol brand. If Energy Phase is right, most downstream EnSurf tactics become phase-dependent rather than free-floating. Methylene blue, feeding windows, training, heat, cold, and outdoor light are not independent knobs. They are inputs to a timed engine.

1.1 What this pillar is not

  • It is not only sleep hygiene.
  • It is not only morning sunlight for the clock.
  • It is not a claim that humans are photosynthetic.
  • It is not a lookup table of magic LED wavelengths for each ETC complex.
  • It is not a replacement for the other four levers. It is their scheduler.

2. Axioms

Energy Phase rests on a small set of axioms. They are stated so they can be denied.

Axiom 1 — ATP relative to load is the master variable

Aging and chronic disease are treated, at first approximation, as progressive mismatch between ATP-generating capacity and imposed load. Hallmarks of aging are downstream compensations: glycolytic reliance, low-grade inflammation, senescence, maladaptive repair. The measurable object is net cellular ATP output relative to demand, not a growing list of disconnected hallmarks.

Axiom 2 — The engine is nested across timescales

Cells do not have one energy system. They have stacked systems with different time constants:

  • Creatine-phosphate: seconds. A charged buffer. The hybrid battery.
  • Glycolysis: minutes. Faster, less efficient, glucose-biased. The on-demand turbine.
  • Mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation: minutes to hours as a continuous base, days to years as capacity. Fat-capable, high-yield. The nuclear reactor of the cell.
  • Hormonal and autonomic modulation: minutes to hours (catecholamines, cortisol, insulin, glucagon).
  • Structural capacity: weeks to years (biogenesis, mitophagy, muscle volume, organ reserve).

Phase is the rule that says which layer should be dominant at which time.

Axiom 3 — Four timing inputs were coupled

In the environment that selected human mitochondria, light field, substrate availability, capacity stress (hormesis / load), and thermal swing rose and fell together as one weather, not freestanding hobbies. Energy Phase names four timing sub-pillars (Grade B): Light timing, Fuel timing, Hormesis timing (not the older Movement label), and Temperature.

Axiom 4 — Clocks exist to keep that coupling

Circadian oscillators are not aesthetic. They anticipate the energy weather. Light to the eyes is the strongest zeitgeber. Feeding and movement are weaker zeitgebers and also direct energy events. Entrainment means the internal schedule still predicts the external one.

Axiom 5 — Light is part of fuel, not only a clock cue

Visible light sets clocks. A broadband field that includes infrared may also modulate electron-transfer kinetics. Even if the second claim is narrowed later, light remains an energy-environment input because it times feeding, activity, vitamin D, thermal load, and sleep. Energy Phase includes both jobs and refuses to collapse them into one.

Axiom 6 — Disease is phase error until proven otherwise

The default hypothesis for a modern chronic state is not a random molecular insult. It is a persistent mismatch between the engine's selected prior and the current distribution of light, fuel, and load. Pharmacology can be necessary. It is downstream of the prior.

Axiom 7 — Local geometry constrains collection, not the target

Heat, humidity, UVB, clothing, cloud, altitude, and latitude change how the field is collected. They do not change the target: a high-contrast, time-structured energy environment. Florida noon sun and a January walk in Toronto are different collection problems for the same pillar.

3. Definition of Energy Phase

Energy Phase is the instantaneous operating regime of the organism's energy-management system, defined by the alignment of four coordinates:

  • External photic field — intensity, spectrum, and geometry of photons incident on eyes and tissue.
  • Internal clock state — phase of SCN and peripheral oscillators relative to local photoperiod.
  • Substrate state — what is being oxidized, how recently it was eaten, glycogen and lipid availability, insulin/glucagon setting.
  • Load state — mechanical, cognitive, immune, and thermal demand relative to current ATP capacity.

When those four coordinates occupy the region the ancestral environment occupied at that time of day and year, the organism is in phase. When they occupy a region the ancestral environment rarely occupied — bright narrow light at midnight, carbohydrate at 01:00, heavy load on a sleep-deprived, IR-starved engine — the organism is in phase error.

Phase is not a binary. It is a distance from the selected manifold. Small daily errors are normal. Chronic residence off the manifold is the proposed upstream condition of metabolic disease.

3.1 The two phases

For operational use, Energy Phase collapses to two regimes. Biology is finer than this. Two regimes are enough to steer.

Active Phase (Charge + Spend)

  • Photon field ON: broadband outdoor light, including infrared.
  • Clock in day state: high alertness, rising core temperature, cortisol front-loaded.
  • Fuel available: feeding permitted; fat oxidation as base; carbohydrate as on-demand overlay.
  • Load permitted: locomotion, strength, cognitive work, heat.
  • Dominant engines: oxphos as base; glycolysis when load spikes; PCr for seconds.
  • Net aim: do work, signal biogenesis, accept hormetic ROS, store nothing as a chronic surplus.

Restore Phase (Discharge the day, recharge the buffers)

  • Photon field OFF: darkness or fire-level light.
  • Clock in night state: melatonin permitted, temperature falling.
  • Fuel tapering: last meal far enough from sleep that the night is not a second fed day.
  • Load withdrawn: no training, no bright cognitive emergency if it can wait.
  • Dominant processes: glycogen and PCr recharge, membrane repair, mitophagy, immune surveillance, memory consolidation.
  • Net aim: quality and density work that cannot happen while the engine is under load.

Circadian alignment, in EnSurf usage, is the practice of keeping the organism in Active Phase during the local photoperiod and Restore Phase after it. That is surfing.

3.2 Phase is not clock time

Wall-clock 07:00 means nothing. Energy Phase is indexed to local solar geometry and to the organism's recent history. A night-shift nurse at 07:00 may be in Restore Phase by prior. A fisherman at 04:30 may already be in Active Phase. The pillar uses photoperiod, solar elevation, last meal, last load, and last sleep — not social time.

4. Nested engines and their phases

The body is a meta-engine that generates power on multiple timescales. Phase error at one layer spills into the others.

4.1 Seconds — creatine-phosphate

The PCr system is a charged buffer. Dietary creatine plus rest fills it. Work empties it in seconds. It is recharged when ATP supply exceeds load. A Restore Phase that is actually dark, fed-enough, and unloaded is when the battery is restored. A culture that trains at 22:00 under bright light and then sleeps poorly is discharging the buffer and refusing to recharge it.

4.2 Minutes — glycolysis

Glycolysis is the mid-range engine. It is older, faster, and less efficient. It is the correct response when load exceeds current oxphos. It is the wrong chronic residence. Warburg-like shifts in non-cancer tissue are treated here as phase-and-capacity errors: the turbine left running because the reactor cannot keep up. Energy Phase predicts that restoring Active-Phase oxphos conditions (fuel quality, photon field, movement that signals capacity) reduces the need for that chronic overlay.

4.3 Hours — oxidative phosphorylation

Oxphos is the base. Preferred fuel, when the engine is healthy, is fat. Carbohydrate is permitted as an overlay. The ETC is the rate-limiting physical machine: complexes I–IV, ubiquinone, cytochrome c, oxygen, proton motive force, ATP synthase. Energy Phase says this machine was selected to run hard in the light and to be serviced in the dark.

4.4 Days to years — capacity

AMP and ROS tell the nucleus how many engines to build and which to scrap. mTOR and testosterone tell muscle how much future load to expect. Inflammation is treated as a signal that load has chronically exceeded capacity. These are the biogenesis, mitophagy, and volume levers. They are slow integrators of phase. You cannot supplement your way around months of inverted light-fuel-load coupling.

4.5 Control layers

  • Autonomic: seconds to minutes. Sympathetic spend; parasympathetic restore.
  • Cortisol: hours. Should be front-loaded in Active Phase.
  • Insulin / glucagon / leptin / ghrelin: hours to days. Feeding phase.
  • Melatonin: night gate. Requires darkness.
  • Peripheral clocks in liver, muscle, adipose, immune cells: hours. Entrained by feeding and load as well as by SCN.

Phase error is often a control-layer fight: liver clock on night-feeding time, SCN on social time, muscle clock on sitting, retina on LED evening. Energy Phase names the fight.

5. The four timing sub-pillars

Light · Fuel · Hormesis · Temperature. The full treatment lives in the Energy Phase essay; this page introduces the fins.

5.1 Light timing

Light does at least four jobs. Energy Phase refuses to flatten them.

  • Job A — Clock. Melanopic light to the eyes. Dawn and the first long-shadow block.
  • Job B — Photometabolic fuel. Broadband field including NIR/IR incident on skin and deeper tissue. Collected whenever the sky is up, including open shade.
  • Job C — UVB / vitamin D. Short-shadow only, seasonal, skin-limited, never to burn.
  • Job D — Contrast. Day bright, night dark. Amplitude is the signal.

Job A is established physiology. Job C is established physiology. Job D is established physiology. Job B is the photometabolism hypothesis: infrared photons near ~0.75 eV may bias Marcus crossings in the ETC by exciting nuclear vibrations in water, protein, lipid, and hydrogen-bond networks, changing barrier-crossing probability rather than supplying chemical energy. Energy Phase includes Job B as a working prior and does not let it overwrite A, C, or D.

5.2 Fuel timing (Sage essay)

Proper human diet means substrates the mitochondrial and nuclear genomes were selected on: whole-animal foods, seasonal plants, no industrial seed-oil flood, no constant refined carbohydrate. Energy Phase adds timing. The ancestral prior is not only what was eaten. It is when oxidation was expected.

  • Active Phase: eating is permitted. Protein and fat as base. Carbohydrate around load if the engine can take it.
  • Restore Phase: the night is not a second day of feeding. Last meal far enough from sleep that the liver clock and the SCN are not arguing.
  • Mismatch examples: late-night eating under bright light; all-day grazing; fasting all day under indoor LEDs then overfeeding in the evening.

Fuel quality and fuel phase are different errors. A perfect ancestral plate eaten at 01:00 under 500-lux LEDs is still phase error.

5.3 Hormesis timing (Sage essay)

(Upgrade from Movement — when of capacity stressors.)

Load tells the engine how much capacity will be needed. Strength and locomotion in Active Phase are volume and hormesis. They raise mitochondrial volume in muscle, signal biogenesis, and set apoptosis thresholds. Sitting through the photoperiod is a prior of low future load. Training at 23:00 under bright light is a prior that night is day.

Ancestral movement was not a one-hour gym class. It was locomotion and intermittent high load in the light, with heat and sun as co-inputs, and rest after dusk. EnSurf keeps strength as the efficient modern concentrator of that signal, and still wants it inside Active Phase.

5.4 Temperature

Temperature is a Circadian timing fin (Metabolic Hypothesis of Temperature / Thyroid). Day heat production and nocturnal decline are timed energy weather. Daily body-temperature curve is the thermal peer of the cortisol curve, not replacing cortisol.

5.5 Why they must be coupled

Each input is a zeitgeber and an energy event. Light times the clock and may change ET rates. Food times peripheral clocks and supplies electrons. Movement times muscle clocks and spends ATP. If they decouple, clocks drift, substrate sits in the wrong engine, and ROS is produced at the wrong time. Coupling is the prior. Decoupling is the modern default.

6. Photometabolism inside Energy Phase

Energy Phase does not depend on photometabolism being fully proven. It is stronger if photometabolism is true, because then light is fuel in the literal kinetic sense.

6.1 The physical proposal

Food supplies reducing power. Electron transfer at each ETC step requires nuclear reorganization so donor and acceptor surfaces meet. Marcus theory gives the barrier as (λ + ΔG°)² / 4λ. Infrared photons at energies overlapping typical λ and activation barriers can excite vibrations and redistribute nuclear configurations. Depending on whether a given step is activationless or activated, the same photon band can speed one reaction and slow another. Wavelength-dependent opposite effects on Complex IV and Complex III are therefore expected, not paradoxical.

The solar photon-number spectrum peaks near 0.75 eV, overlapping inferred metabolic barrier heights. Atmosphere and tissue optical windows pass red and near-infrared deeper than UV or much of visible light. The proposed chain is:

SUN → atmosphere windows → tissue optical window → molecular vibration → electron-transfer kinetics → mitochondria → metabolism → systemic biology.

This is not photosynthesis. Photons are not replacing calories. They are proposed as part of the physical environment in which rate constants were selected.

6.2 What was not selected

The ETC was not selected to a panel of 630 / 660 / 810 / 850 nm LEDs. Those are convenient industrial lines that happen to sit inside CCO absorption and the red/NIR window. Empirical maps by complex are incomplete and sometimes contradictory. Complex II is largely silent in these assays. Complex III can rise or fall with 808 nm depending on the paper. Complex IV is stimulated at several red/NIR bands and inhibited at 750 and 950 nm in at least one COX scan. That mess is predicted if the real prior is a broadband field acting on many crossings at once.

6.3 Evolutionary precision

The strongest form — "each complex was naturally selected to a solar wavelength" — is too strong. Chromophores are chemically constrained. ETC architecture is older than terrestrial daylight. Geothermal NIR at vents already occupies 750–1050 nm. The defensible form is:

The ETC was selected inside a persistent sub-electron-volt photon and vibrational field. Surface sunlight is the high-flux ancestral instance of that field for humans. Modern narrow indoor spectra are out of distribution.

That is a fuel-prior claim, not a chromophore-tuning claim.

7. The ancestral energy-environment training set

EnSurf already states that we are born with biology optimized to ancestral food, circadian, and movement environments, and that modern disease is mismatch. Energy Phase specifies the light slice of that mismatch.

7.1 What the training set contained

  • Photoperiod as the day length of the place you actually lived, not an equatorial constant after leaving Africa.
  • A solar spectrum that changed with elevation: dawn clock light, midday full field plus heat and UVB, dusk red/NIR, night near-zero.
  • Most waking hours outdoors or in open shade, not twelve hours of direct beam.
  • Behavioral thermoregulation: shade and reduced activity at peak heat.
  • Firelight after dark, not vision-optimized white LEDs.
  • Feeding in the active phase, scarcity or taper at night.
  • Locomotion and intermittent high load in the light.
  • Season: long light and high UV in summer at mid-latitudes; short light and collapsed UVB in winter, with more clothing.

7.2 What it did not contain

  • All-day equatorial noon exposure at 43°N.
  • Bright indoor light from 18:00 to 23:30.
  • A 400–700 nm-only day.
  • Sleep in a lit room.
  • Sitting through the entire photoperiod.
  • A single magic wavelength.

7.3 Prior, not paleo costume

The training-set metaphor is Bayesian, not theatrical. The organism has priors over when electrons arrive, when load arrives, and what photon bath the ETC sits in. You cannot reconstruct Pleistocene Africa in Vero Beach or Toronto. You can stop feeding the engine a light-fuel-load joint distribution it never saw.

8. Phase error

Phase error is chronic residence off the selected manifold. Common modern forms:

Light-phase errors

  • IR-poor indoor day (Job B missing).
  • No morning sky (Job A missing).
  • Noon burn or noon avoidance that becomes all-day indoor (Job C botched, Job B lost).
  • Bright evening and night (Job D inverted).
  • Short-wavelength night light, which is a clock insult and a possible CI-weighted ROS insult.

Fuel-phase errors

  • Late feeding under day-like light.
  • All-day grazing so there is no restore oxidation setting.
  • Ancestral-quality food at an inverted time.
  • Industrial substrates (refined carbohydrate, seed oils) as the chronic base.

Load-phase errors

  • Sitting through Active Phase.
  • High load in Restore Phase.
  • No hormetic signal, so volume and density drift down.
  • Chronic load above capacity, read out as inflammation.

Coupling errors

The worst errors are products, not sums: late carbohydrate + bright LED + no prior movement. Each peripheral clock receives a different story. The ETC receives electrons without the photon bath or the load it was paired with. ROS timing drifts. Mitophagy is asked to run during a second day.

8.1 Compensatory cascade

Energy Phase predicts a stereotyped downstream sequence when ATP capacity lags load:

  • Greater glycolytic share (turbine left on).
  • Higher leak and ROS at the wrong clock time.
  • Inflammatory signaling as a load-capacity alarm.
  • Appetite and apoB shifts as dashboard readings of an upstream energy crisis.
  • Sarcopenia and lost mitochondrial volume as a revised prior that load will stay low.
  • Impaired mitophagy as a restore-phase failure.
  • Senescence and fibrosis as long-horizon compensations.

This is the same upstream story EnSurf already applies to atherosclerosis and aging. Energy Phase adds that the crisis can be produced by timing alone, even when the grocery list looks clean.

8.2 Cortisol dashboard (read-out not a fifth lever)

The cortisol 24h curve is a high-level Circadian energy-management read-out, not a fifth timing lever. The daily body-temperature curve is its thermal peer, not replacing cortisol. Map ≠ terrain.

9. Mapping onto the five levers

Lever What Energy Phase does to it
ETC function Schedules the photon bath and the electron supply onto the same active window; treats IR-rich spectrum as a kinetic prior, MB and other carriers as downstream modulators.
Density (biogenesis) Puts AMP/ROS signals in Active Phase when building engines is the correct story.
Quality (mitophagy) Protects Restore Phase so damaged engines can be removed; treats night-eating and night-light as mitophagy interference.
Volume (load) Puts strength and locomotion in the light; treats sitting-all-day as a low-volume prior.
Fuel Joins food quality to food timing and to light-as-fuel; refuses to call an inverted day "well fueled."

Conditioning and membrane function, as named on the EnSurf site, sit across ETC function and Restore Phase: voltage and ROS set apoptosis thresholds; night is when the membrane is serviced. Hormesis belongs in Active Phase. Repair belongs in Restore Phase.

10. Geometry engine — how to collect the field

Energy Phase uses solar geometry, not clock time. This is the portable method across latitude, climate, and season.

10.1 Elevation bands

  • Long shadow (sun low): Jobs A and B. Clock plus red/NIR-rich beam. Low UVB. Dawn and dusk everywhere on Earth.
  • Medium shadow: mixed field. Good outdoor work.
  • Short shadow (sun high): max flux, max UVB, max heat. Ancestral collection is open shade, not beam-basking.
  • Night (after civil dusk): field OFF. Job D.

10.2 Dose rules that travel

  • Daily floor: 15–40 minutes of open sky in the first long-shadow block after waking; 45–180 minutes of total sky-view across the day, more on long photoperiods.
  • Daily ceiling: never to erythema. Heat shifts collection into shade and the ends of the day.
  • Weekly shape: most days hit the floor. A few days in the UVB season add a controlled short-shadow skin dose on a fraction of the body.
  • Night: indoor light far below daytime outdoor; sleep dark.

10.3 Climate overlays

  • Hot-humid (Florida, Gulf, monsoon, equatorial): dawn sky, shade-heavy midday outdoors, late-afternoon second block, dark nights. Constraint is heat and UVB, not lack of photons.
  • Hot-dry: more beam tolerated at the ends of the day; still shade at peak elevation.
  • Temperate: shoulder seasons are the easy match. Summer uses the hot overlay. Winter drops Job C and keeps A, B, D.
  • Cloudy maritime: stay out longer; overcast still delivers B and some A.
  • High-latitude summer: huge B opportunity; shade the short-shadow core; force evening darkness because photoperiod will not.
  • High-latitude winter: A and D dominate; B is "go outside at midday in clothes"; no UVB fantasy.
  • Altitude: UVB rises fast; shorten short-shadow skin time.
  • Snow: reflected UV and visible; clothing remains ancestral; face and eyes still do Job A.

10.4 Latitude overlay

Live on local photoperiod. Florida is a long-day, high-UVB, high-heat instance of the same engine. Toronto winter is a short-day, low-UVB instance. The pillar does not change. Collection does.

11. Estimating ancestral-like dose in a modern place

The reconstruction problem is not solvable to the watt. It is solvable as a distribution. Estimate by matching four statistics of the ancestral day.

Statistic 1 — When the field turns on

Be outdoors, or at a true sky window, within the first long-shadow block after waking. Forager groups often wake near or before sunrise. You do not have to. You do have to give the clock a dawn-class signal on most days.

Statistic 2 — How long the field stays on

Waking life was spent mostly outdoors or in dwellings that did not seal off the sky. You will not reconstruct that in a clinic or an office. You reconstruct a reduced version: commute on foot or bike when possible, eat one meal outside, train outside, walk at lunch in open shade, sit a morning coffee under sky. Accumulate sky-view minutes. Indoor bright light is a weak substitute for Job A and a near-zero substitute for Job B.

Statistic 3 — Midday is not the whole dose

Do not treat solar noon as the goal. Treat it as the heat/UV constraint. Open shade at noon is ancestral. Direct beam at noon is optional and small. People who "get their sun" as a Saturday burn are sampling the worst part of the distribution.

Statistic 4 — When the field turns off

After civil dusk, intensity and spectrum should collapse. Firelight is the ancestral evening prior: low melanopic, some long-wave. Bright overhead LEDs are a day signal at night. Screens are a day signal at night. This statistic is the cheapest one to restore and the one modern life violates most reliably.

11.1 A worked example — Vero Beach, early September

  • Sunrise ~07:00 local class; get 20–40 min of sky as soon as practicable after waking.
  • Work or walk outdoors in open shade through late morning.
  • Short-shadow core: shade, hat, or brief exposed-skin dose if Job C is a goal. Do not make noon the session.
  • Late afternoon: second outdoor block as heat falls and the beam reddens.
  • After sunset: dim indoor light; no second day in the kitchen under office-bright LEDs.
  • Seasonal swing is modest compared with 45°N. Heat, not darkness, is the local constraint.

11.2 A worked example — mid-latitude winter

  • Photoperiod is the prior. Do not invent extra UVB.
  • Morning sky still does Job A, even if overcast.
  • Midday outdoor walk in clothes does Job B.
  • Evening darkness must be deliberate; social night is longer than solar night.
  • Job C waits for the UVB season or uses diet/stores. That is also ancestral at high latitude.

11.3 What to log

Once a week is enough to steer:

  • Wake time versus sunrise.
  • Minutes of morning sky-view.
  • Minutes of total sky-view, noting shade versus beam.
  • Any pink skin (should be rare).
  • Sleep onset versus sunset.
  • Evening indoor brightness: fire-like versus office.

Outcome dashboards remain lean mass, grip, aerobic capacity, daytime energy, and sleep. If those move and skin is not burning, the light prior is close enough.

12. Interventions, ordered

Energy Phase inherits EnSurf's vest-before-bullet rule.

Tier 0 — free phase restoration

  • Morning sky.
  • Daytime outdoor or open-shade minutes.
  • Proper human diet in the active window.
  • Strength and locomotion in the light.
  • Dark restore.

If this tier is missing, later tiers are asked to correct a prior they cannot correct.

Tier 1 — frugal modulators after the vest

Examples already named in EnSurf practice: creatine as buffer fill, CoQ10, astaxanthin, NAD precursor work (this hypothesis discusses low-dose IR NA beyond proper diet, with NR/NMN not the default; information, not a recommendation). These are not phase. They are possible helpers of an engine that is already timed.

Tier 2 — directed ETC tools

Methylene blue sits here: a chemical electron carrier aimed at pillar 1. Photometabolic outdoor IR sits in Tier 0 as environment. Narrow red/NIR devices sit between Tier 1 and 2: useful when sky is inaccessible, incomplete as a replacement for the field, capable of opposite effects on adjacent complexes.

Tier 3 — downstream medicine

Pharmacology, when needed, acts on dashboards and compensations. Energy Phase does not reject it. It refuses to treat it as the restoration of the prior.

13. Predictions

A hypothesis earns its keep by saying what should be true.

  • P1. Holding diet and training fixed, increasing day/night light amplitude (brighter, broader days; darker nights) improves sleep timing, daytime energy, and recovery.
  • P2. Holding clock time in bed fixed, moving feeding into the photoperiod improves metabolic flexibility relative to the same calories at night.
  • P3. Training in Active Phase outperforms the same training placed in Restore Phase on recovery and strength accretion, all else equal.
  • P4. Broadband IR-rich outdoor light changes mitochondrial respiration in ways monochromatic red/NIR only partly reproduces.
  • P5. 808-class monochromatic light can raise CIV activity while lowering CIII activity; a solar spectrum will not copy that single-line signature.
  • P6. Chronic phase error produces glycolytic bias, inflammatory tone, and falling work capacity even when grocery quality is acceptable.
  • P7. High-latitude winter loss of UVB will not erase Jobs A, B, and D; people who keep those three jobs will fare better than people who only chase vitamin D.
  • P8. Heat-limited climates will show better dashboards from dawn-plus-shade collection than from noon beam collection.
  • P9. Glass-filtered indoor "daylight" will underperform open-sky time on Job B even when lux looks similar.
  • P10. Tools that improve ETC chemistry (including methylene blue) will underperform, or backfire, if Active/Restore structure is inverted.

14. Falsifiers

  • F1. If day/night light contrast can be destroyed without metabolic cost when sleep duration is held constant, Job D is overstated.
  • F2. If monochromatic 660/850 nm fully substitutes for broadband outdoor light on respiration, glucose handling, and recovery, Job B as solar-field fuel is wrong and collapses to CCO photochemistry.
  • F3. If feeding time is irrelevant once composition and calories are fixed, fuel phase is wrong.
  • F4. If training time of day is irrelevant once volume and sleep are fixed, load phase is weak.
  • F5. If deep viscera show no photon-dependent ET kinetics at physiological irradiances, photometabolism does not scale to systemic metabolism.
  • F6. If chronic disease phenotypes do not enrich for ATP-capacity-versus-load mismatch, Axiom 1 fails and Energy Phase loses its upstream claim.

Photometabolism can fail while Energy Phase still stands, because A, C, D, feeding phase, and load phase do not require Marcus-IR. If photometabolism stands, pillar 5 (fuel) becomes physically tighter.

15. Relations to neighboring theories

Circadian medicine

Energy Phase accepts the zeitgeber hierarchy (light > feeding > activity > temperature) and then insists those zeitgebers are also energy events. Circadian medicine often stops at clock alignment. This pillar does not.

Photobiomodulation

PBM supplies much of the empirical wavelength data. Energy Phase treats PBM as a narrow-band probe of a system that was selected on a broad field. Clinical LEDs are tools. They are not the prior.

Photometabolism (Fosbury, Seheult, Zimmerman, Jeffery)

This pillar absorbs their chain as the leading physical account of Job B, with their own caveat: the whole pathway is not proven. The energy-scale coincidence (solar photon-number peak near metabolic barriers) is treated as a clue, not a theorem.

Hallmarks of aging

Mitochondrial dysfunction and epigenetic drift sit at the center. Other hallmarks are remapped as capacity or phase failures. This is already EnSurf's aging claim. Energy Phase supplies the clock.

ApoB-retention models of atherosclerosis

EnSurf already treats apoB as a dashboard of an upstream energy crisis. Energy Phase adds that the crisis can be timed: a liver running a night-feeding program inside a day-sitting, IR-poor body.

Metabolic flexibility

Flexibility is the ability to switch engines when phase and substrate change. Inflexibility is an engine stuck in turbine mode because phase error and capacity loss never let the reactor take the base load.

16. Language of the pillar

Words that stay:

  • Energy Phase — the operating regime defined by photic field, clock, substrate, and load.
  • Active Phase / Restore Phase — the two operational regimes.
  • Phase error — chronic distance from the selected manifold.
  • Joint prior / training set — ancestral coupling of light, fuel, hormesis load, and temperature (Grade B).
  • Photon field — the broadband environmental input, especially its IR-rich body.
  • Jobs A–D — clock, photometabolic fuel, UVB/D, contrast.
  • Surfing — staying on the local photoperiod's energy wave.

Words that are not allowed to swallow the pillar:

  • "Circadian" as a synonym for sleep.
  • "Light" as a synonym for vitamin D.
  • "Red light therapy" as a synonym for the solar field.
  • "Ancestral" as costume rather than prior.

17. Statement of limits

Energy Phase is a control-systems hypothesis about timing. It does not deny infection, toxin, trauma, Mendelian disease, or the usefulness of drugs. It claims that a large fraction of modern chronic burden is intelligible as phase error plus lost ATP capacity, and that the cheapest corrections are environmental because the environment was the original controller.

Photometabolism is nested inside the pillar as a physical hypothesis about Job B. Complex-resolved wavelength optima are not established. Marcus-IR is not established in human viscera at ambient fluxes. Those gaps are marked so the pillar can grow without pretending to be finished.

Nothing in this paper is a prescription for any person. Skin cancer risk, heat illness, medications that photosensitize, bipolar vulnerability to light, and retinal disease are clinical constraints on collection. The geometry engine yields to those constraints. The target does not change.

18. Canonical summary

Human metabolism runs in phase. The selected phase is a day in which light, food, and movement rise together and a night in which they fall together. Circadian clocks exist to keep that coupling. Light is a clock cue and, provisionally, a kinetic fuel for electron transfer. The ancestral photon field was broadband and IR-rich, shaped by solar elevation, collected under shade and clothing as heat and UVB required, and absent after dark. Modern life splits the joint prior.

EnSurf's circadian pillar is therefore not a bedtime rule. It is Energy Phase: the practice of matching the organism to the ancestral energy-management environment over time. The five levers are what get scheduled. Surfing is how they are scheduled.

Build the vest first — diet, photon field, load, dark restore. Modulate the engine second. Treat the dashboard last.
